The Chicago Critics Film Festival at the Music Box Theatre will present a week of new films by such well-known Indie directors as Bobcat Goldthwaite (yes, the funny man is a respected filmmaker), Joe Swanberg and Andrew Bujalski, and starring Anna Kendrick, Orlando Bloom, Guy Pearce and many others.
Start with the experience. The Music Box Theatre is a restored film house from Chicago’s golden age, complete with mammoth pipe organ and overhead effects such as clouds and stars. It’s a great place to watch movies.
This year’s Chicago Critics Film Festival is loaded with great films. Bobcat Goldthwaite presents “Call Me Lucky,” a documentary about an infamous comedian’s obsession with Ronald Reagan. Commentary is provided by the very funny Margaret Cho and Marc Maron. Joe Swanberg’s “Digging for Fire” is a cautionary tale about a young couple adjusting to having a baby. “World of Tomorrow,” about a girl getting a glimpse of her distant future, won the 2015 Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. “The Keeping Room” is about Southern sisters and their female slave, at the end of the Civil War. Director Andrew Bujalski’s “Results” is an offbeat comedy about two fitness trainers and their encounter with a rich client.
