Bring the family for the holiday tradition of traditions, “A Christmas Carol,” through December 28 at the Goodman Theatre, and stay at the nearby and affordable Chicago Lake Shore Hotel!

The Goodman Theatre’s production of “A Christmas Carol,” the new version adapted by playwright Tom Creamer and directed by Henry Wishcamp, always plays to rave reviews and excited audiences. The wonderful actor Larry Yando is Scrooge. Yando will star as King Lear, for Chicago Shakespeare Theatre next fall. The “A Christmas Carol” production includes magical illusions and an exciting musical score by composer Andrew Hansen.

If you like your Dickens dark and funny, the Goodman and The Second City have partnered to offer “Twist Your Dickens,” a hilarious parody of the story written by former Colbert Report writers Peter Gwinn and Bobby Mort, playing in the smaller Owen Theatre. The play opens December 5.

Charles Dickens’ timeless tale of the miser Ebenezer Scrooge and his horrible treatment of his clerk, Bob Cratchit, set in 1800’s London, is said by many scholars and biographers to be responsible for the modern, commercialized Christmas we know today. Dickens himself feared as much. The pressure he felt from his reading public, to keep writing Christmas stories, plagued him for his whole career.

The Goodman Theatre is located at 170 North Dearborn Street in Chicago’s Loop. For tickets, show times and more information, call (312) 443-3800.
