Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz

The City of Chicago, known far and wide for its festivals, presents Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz, with commissioned works by arrangers Steve Coleman, Juli Wood and Caroline Davis, and Greg Ward!

Lineup for Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz: Thursday, August 6, MacArthur Award winner Steve Coleman and the band Five Elements, in residence at the University of Chicago, present a tribute to the legendary Von Freeman. Thursday, August 13, showcases a tribute to Charles Mingus’ album, “Black Saint and the Sinner Lady,” with musical direction by Greg Ward.

Thursday, August 20, the Great Black Music Ensemble presents a three part show: “Ancient to the Future.” Dance groups Ayodeli Dance and Drum Corp, Deeply Rooted Dance Company and King’s Eye View will interpret the music. On Thursday, August 27, “We REInsist: Max Roach and Oscar Brown Jr.’s Freedom Now Suite Reimagined.” Maggie Brown, Oscar’s daughter, will sing, and saxophonist Ari Brown will be in the band.

Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz will be performed at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park, 201 East Randolph Street. Admission is free. For more information, go to www.cityofchicago.org and follow the prompts.
