“East of Eden” is American novelist John Steinbeck’s masterpiece. It is a sort of retelling of the Book of Genesis, with a patriarch, Adam Trask, his “monster” (Steinbeck’s word) of a wife, Kate and his two sons Caleb and Aaron (Cain and Abel), trying to live out a dream of farming in California’s Salinas Valley. With a script adaptation by Frank Galati and directed by Terry Kinney, this show will be the hit of the Chicago theatre season.
Steppenwolf Theatre has been one of the great theatre companies of the world for over thirty years. Its alumni include Laurie Metcalf, Gary Sinise, Joan Allen, Martha Plimpton, John Malcovich, and John Mahoney, among many others. They got their start in a church basement in a Chicago suburb and never looked back.
In the 70s, Steppenwolf mounted another Steinbeck masterpiece, “The Grapes of Wrath,” both at Steppenwolf and later on Broadway. It was one of the most highly theatrical productions of all time.
