Attend the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival at Northwestern University’s Nichols Concert Hall November 7-8 and stay at the nearby and affordable Chicago Lake Shore Hotel!

This outstanding jazz festival, sponsored by The Music Institute of Chicago, features concerts and a lecture by prominent jazz artists and a historian. “Bird With Strings,” on Friday at 7:30 pm, presents music from the original legendary recording, featuring Charles McPherson on saxophone and Tammy McCann on vocals. Also on the program is the premiere of a work for jazz quartet and strings, by composer Victor Goines.

Saturday, from 9:00 am to 3 pm, enjoy The Jazz Invitational, featuring invited local high school jazz bands and a clinic by Charles McPherson. At 4 pm, writer and jazz historian Stanley Crouch talks about his new book, “Kansas City Lightning: The Rise and Times of Charlie Parker,” moderated by jazz commentator Richard Steele. At 7:30 pm, enjoy the Bebop Extravaganza, featuring Victor Garcia on trumpet, Jeremy Kahn on piano, Stewart Miller on bass, Ernie Adams on drums and Audrey Morrison on trombone. They will perform such Charlie Parker classics as, “Confirmation,” “Moose the Mooch,” and “Ornithology.”
