On Friday March 6, the Chicago Flamenco Festival features the great dancer Carmen La Talegona with singer Roberto Lorente and guitarist Antonio Sanchez. Carmen La Talegona, at the age of 14, won the National Flamenco Dance Competition in Cordoba, Spain. Also on the program is Los Companeros, featuring dancer Melody Vasquez and musicians Tony Kimball and Mike Kuchna.
On Saturday, March 7, the Chicago Flamenco Festival presents the Spanish and flamenco dances of Soul e Duende, directed by the legendary dancer and choreographer Azucena Vega, and Carmen La Talegona. A closing reception and party follows with DJ Bumbac Joe.
The Spanish art form of flamenco dates back to 1774. Flamenco dance, thought to be invented by the Romani people of Spain, features singing, dancing, guitar playing and hand claps. It has roots in Greek, Roman, Jewish, Moorish and Indian cultures and has been designated by UNESCO as “masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity.”
